When Reporting Discrimination or Unlawful Harassment to HR
Reporting Discrimination to HR
Do:
Make your complaint in writing
Explicitly use the words "discrimination" or "harassment"
Explicitly state what type of discrimination you are being subjected to, i.e. race, sex, age, disability, etc.
Be concise and to the point in your written complaint
Keep your written complaint straightforward and focused
Create a record of your subsequent communications with HR
Send an email to the HR Rep confirming that the conversation took place and mentioning the highlights of What you told or described to the HR Rep
Consult With an attorney that specializes in employment law
Don't:
Write vague and general complaints about being treated "unfairly" or being "bullied"
Include every little slight or minor issues that are unrelated to the specific discrimination you are complaining about
Forget to keep your own records. You don't want the HR Rep's notes to be the sole documentation of the interview
Go on without an attorney. HR Reps have the benefit of corporate counsel to advise them on every move they make
This creates a private checklist in your account.
