  • Keep a shovel in the basement

  • Set up local text alerts on your phone for things like storm warnings or power outages

  • Make sure your carbon monoxide and fire alarms are working

  • Make sure your gas heater is checked by a professional every year

  • Make sure your fireplace(s) are serviced each year

  • Make sure your pipes are well insulated (inside and out)

  • Make sure your doors and windows are properly sealed

  • Have your heat to at least 68 during the day and don\'t have it too low during the night (especially if you are out of town)

  • Open cabinets were there is plumbing during a deep freeze (especially if you are out of town)

  • If you are out of town leave some of your faucets on a low drip

  • Make sure your outdoor water source is turned off

  • Disconnect your hose and turn off your sprinkler system

  • Make sure your plants have a few inches of mulch around them to protect the roots

  • Water a few days before a deep freeze if you can

  • Cover tropical plants with plastic before freeze

  • Put plants in containers inside your garage

  • Secure anything that could get blown away
