Big 6 Research

  • STEP 1: TASK DEFINITION

  • 1. Define your research problem. Write it out!

  • 2. Determine what information you need to research about your problem.

  • STEP 2: INFORMATION SEEKING STRATEGIES

  • 1. Decide what kinds of sources you will use.

  • 2. Decide which are the best sources for your project.

  • STEP 3: LOCATION AND ACCESS

  • 1. Find the sources you have decided are best for your project. (HINT: Your librarian is happy to help if needed!)

  • 2. Look inside those sources. Find the information you would like to use.

  • STEP 4: USE OF INFORMATION

  • 1. Work with the information you have found. Does it make sense? Is it what you are looking for?

  • 2. Pull out all of the information you can use. Relevant information helps you answer your research question!

  • 3. Take lots of notes!

  • STEP 5: SYNTHESIS

  • 1. Organize all of the information you have found. Use charts, graphs, blank paper - whatever works best for you!

  • 2. Present the information to your teacher or class.

  • STEP 6: EVALUATION

  • 1. Look back at your research process. Did you use your time well?

  • 2. Look back at your research question. Did you answer the question with the new information that you found?
